Mayfield Park and Nature Preserve Austin is a 23-acre historic estate gifted to the city in 1971. The grounds feature a charming cottage, koi ponds, and stone walls. While it’s possible to see bats at Mayfield Park and Nature Preserve Austin, the best time to visit is between March and October. Bats begin flying around 20 minutes before sundown and stay out for about 45 minutes. Bat pups are born in June, but don’t start flying until mid-August. During these times, the best places to see bats are the grassy hill on the southeastern side of the Congress Avenue Bridge and the eastern part of the Ann & Roy Butler Hike & Bike Trail.
